Frequently asked questions

The photos

The room is narrow and I can't get it all in: is it OK if some of it is cut off?

Yes, front-on is better, even if some of it is cut off. Try the wide-angle first, even a very wide one; if it still won't all fit, choose the front-on framing you like best with what does fit. We can't publish the two dry-side photos if they're taken at an angle, though.

I have lots of enlargers: which one do I photograph?

Whichever you prefer, one or more, facing the baseboard. You can put the others among the optional photos, after the three main ones.

Why do the three main photos all have to be taken the same way?

So the darkrooms can be seen side by side. With so many darkrooms, visual consistency matters: I know that each of us printers has some "nice" photos of our own darkroom somewhere, and you can upload those among the other photos. The first three follow the guide. They don't have to be as perfect as on the first day: photos 1 and 2 front-on, on a tripod, one under white light and one under the safelight; the wet side can be at an angle if the sink is long.

What's the red-light photo for?

On your page there's a switch that flips from white light to red, so people see the room as you do. That's why it has to be taken from the same spot as the first one, without moving the tripod, with only the safelight on.

I don't have trays, I develop with a processor.

No problem: photograph the processor, front-on. It's your wet side, and this photo should show the place where you work with the chemistry, whatever form that takes. For the wet side, a single photo is enough.

The site tells me my photos are small.

The site won't accept a photo under 1,500 pixels wide. To get sharp, good-quality photographs, we ask you to retake the photo with your phone straight from the site, or to upload it again as a file of at least 2,000 pixels on the long edge. Thank you!

I need to retake some photos: do I send them by email?

No, upload them straight to the site, as you did the first time. When you press Publish, or Save changes if your darkroom is already online, we get a notification and we look at them. To sign back in, just use the link you have, or go to Resend link and ask for a new one using the email address on your profile.

Your darkroom's page

What language do I write the text in?

Your own. The site translates it automatically into Italian, English, Spanish, Catalan, French, German and Portuguese, and readers can always open the original. These are the languages for now, but the list will grow with the site.

I have more than one darkroom, for example a lab and one at home.

Each darkroom has its own page and its own email address: for each of the others, go to Join, use another email address, even a colleague's, and create a separate profile for it. If you only have one address and use Gmail, you can add a + before the @, for example name+darkroom2@gmail.com: you'll still get the emails. Before creating the next profile, press Sign out in the menu.

Can I change or delete the page later?

Yes, whenever you like, by signing in with your email address. If you change something on a page that's already published, we look at it again before it goes online, and we'll let you know when it's done. If you delete it, the page and all its photos will be deleted.

Who looks at the photos before they go online?

I look at them myself, Francesco, within 24 hours. The two dry-side photos need to be front-on: if one is at an angle, I'll write to you and you'll need to retake it before your darkroom is published. If the safelight photo is taken from a different spot to the white-light one, your darkroom will still be published and you'll have a month to retake it: I'll send you a reminder by email. If you have any questions, write to us from the Contact us page.

The project

How much does it cost to take part?

Nothing, it's free. This project was started to celebrate the art of analogue photography all over the world.

Can people see where I live?

No. Each darkroom's page shows only the city, and we permanently delete any GPS data from your photos before publishing them. If you're interested, all the technical steps are in the guide and the privacy notice.

My darkroom is in a country I can't see on the map yet.

We're gathering darkrooms one country at a time, inviting people to take part little by little. But you can join whenever you like, from any country: on the Join page we'll send you the link straight away to sign in and add your darkroom.

The sign-in link doesn't work.

Go to Resend link, enter your email address and we'll send you a new one. Check your spam folder and the Promotions tab of your email app. If it still doesn't work, write to us from the Contact us page.

Can I spread the word about the project? Are you on Instagram?

Yes, and we'd love that! We're on Instagram as @inmydarkroom.app. And if you know other people with a darkroom, on your page you'll find the links to invite them. Or send them the site, if you haven't joined yet. Thank you!

How do I sign out of my profile?

Press Sign out in the menu. When you sign in, the site recognises you on that browser with a single essential cookie, so you don't have to use the link every time. If you're on a shared computer, remember to sign out. To sign back in, just use the link you have, or go to Resend link.
